Independence Day Conference - 27/11/99

On Saturday the 27th of November ETSSG held a public conference in Glasgow to celebrate East Timorese independence (declared on 28th November 1975).   Around 40 people attended to discuss the plight of East Timorese refugees in West Timor and Indonesia, the need for a War crimes tribunal, and what the future holds for East Timor.

 

UN Ballot Observers speak of their experiences - 14/10/99

Two Scots were chosen as UN observers for a historic ballot in East Timor. Linda Fabiani MSP and Steve Malloch, Secretary of the East Timor Scotland Support Group will report back on the vote, which is the first chance the East Timorese have had to determine their own future in over two decades.

On the 14th October they spoke about their experiences at a public meeting in Glasgow. The audience then discussed the issues raised with the speakers and the Chair of the East Timor Scotland Support Group, Donald Reid, provided an update on the current situation in East Timor.

The UN Observers first spoke in Edinburgh on the 17th September at a very well attended public meeting.

 

Launch of the group - 10/7/99

The group was launched in Glasgow on 10th July. Among those present were:
